Announcing the release of Winter's Night
One of the (nine) “Best classical Christmas recordings of 2017"
Lisa Flynn, WFMT (Chicago) | Full article
Late last year, after Skylark’s third year of performing an ever-evolving Christmas concert based around the music of Hugo Distler, our friends and supporters urged us to consider recording our unique program. As 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of Distler’s passing, it seemed to be a perfect time to create this recording. Structured around Distler's seven variations of the hymn Es ist ein Ros Entsprungen (Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming), Winter’s Night is a serenely beautiful album that marks our inaugural recording for the Christmas season.
Winter's Night debuted at #7 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart. Read further press, including features from Classics Today, BBC 3, and Limelight Magazine (Australia)

SEVEN LAST WORDS
Conceived for Skylark's international debut on the evening of Good Friday at Tenebrae's prestigious Holy Week Festival in London, our program will progress through the scriptural seven last words of Christ on the Cross. This dramatic program will pair uniquely American choral works with choral music from other regions of the world. Skylark will record this album for international release on the GRAMMY Award-winning Sono Luminus label for release in conclusion with this series of concerts.
*Skylark is offering a special tour package for interested subscribers and patrons. Join us in London for the broader Holy Week concert series (with concerts by groups like Polyphony, Tenebrae, The Tallis Scholars, and others), behind-the-scenes tours of choral venues, a conversation with Matthew Guard and Nigel Short, Artistic Director of Tenebrae (and former Kings' Singer), and more. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if interested in learning more.
LIEDER & LOVESONGS
During a time when classical instrumental music underwent a remarkable metamorphosis (from Brahms to Stravinsky and beyond), the popular love song experienced a parallel evolution, from the romantic lieder of 19th century Europe to the "American Standard" of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. This charming program will pair melodies from romantic masters such as Brahms, Schubert, Debussy, and Saint-Saëns with offerings from American songwriters such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin.
Skylark is a premier vocal ensemble of leading American vocal soloists, chamber musicians, and music educators. Skylark’s music has been described as “sublimely beautiful” (Opera Obsession), “engrossing…reaches in through the ribs and grips the vitals” (Q2/WQXR NY), and enough to “leave a hardened critic near tears” (Boston Music Intelligencer). With “some of Boston’s best singers” (Boston Globe), the voices of Skylark “can sway you softly into calm and then all but throw you across the room with sheer harmonic force” (Thought Catalog). Skylark strives to set the standard for innovative, engaging, well-researched, and dramatically presented programs that re-define the choral experience for audiences and singers alike.
