An apocryphal story recounts that when conductor Nikolai Danilin first heard Sergei Rachmaninoff play the score for his All-Night Vigil (‘Vespers’), Danilin said “Where am I to get such basses? They are as rare as Asparagus at Christmas!" In the fall of 2019, three giants of the choral world will join Skylark to present the greatest masterwork of a cappella music as it has never been heard before: a performance of the finest professional vocalists in the United States anchored by three world-renowned basses joining forces for the first time ever. Indeed more rare than “asparagus at Christmas,” don’t miss this once-in-a-generation experience!

2018 marked the 100th anniversary of A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, held annually at King's College Chapel in Cambridge, England. To celebrate this centenary, Skylark Artistic Director Matthew Guard and colleagues in Cambridge meticulously researched the history of this service and the angelic music that has graced its Christmas broadcasts over the last century. After four packed performances in 2018, Skylark will reprise this stunning program (with some exciting new additions!), presenting beloved carols that connect our audiences to one hundred years of celebrations of the holiday spirit.

Over three years, Skylark has pioneered an entirely new concert experience that weaves choral music from all ages into engaging stories shared by master storyteller Sarah Walker. This year, we re-imagine our whimsical and inventive program inspired by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen in a dynamic collaboration with composer Benedict Sheehan. We present the fantastical stories of Snow White and The Little Mermaid in impressionistic musical form: Sheehan's new and original scoring will blend seamlessly with Sarah Walker's narrative, stitching together an eclectic and engaging mix of existing music from Ralph Vaughan Williams, Francis Poulenc, Leonard Bernstein, Morten Lauridsen, and more. Once Upon a Time is a one-of-a-kind 'choral-theatrical' experience that brings music and fantasy to life in a whole new way!
