It’s a Long Way explores our collective experience of living through the 19 months since our last Skylark concert. It has been a time of great disruption, of isolation, of fear, and of loss, but also a time for reflection, for hope, for growth, and for action. In addition to pieces arranged for choir, half a dozen Skylark singers are featured as soloists in a concert that explores a wide range of musical styles – renaissance polyphony, traditional folksongs, modern choral compositions, solo songs for voice, romantic lieder, and even a classic jazz standard. It’s a Long Way was recorded as Skylark's next album in the summer of 2021, with 26 artists taking part in a innovative recording that we believe may be our finest yet. Join us for what will be an unforgettable return to the concert hall!

In our first ever Christmas storytelling concert, Skylark again partners with master storyteller Sarah Walker to offer a new musical interpretation of A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Working from the original text abridged by Artistic Director Matthew Guard, Composer Benedict Sheehan (our recent collaborator for Once Upon A Time) has created a new concert-length story score that weaves familiar Christmas carols into the fabric of the Dickens story. Bringing timeless carols of the season together with the beloved characters of Charles Dickens promises to create an unforgettable new version of a Christmas classic.

Skylark first premiered its Remembrance program in 2019 with the intention of making it an annual event each Memorial Day. Three years later, we are finally able to return to Falmouth with this concert, and expand the concept to present music from multiple times of conflict in our nation’s history. This year the concert will include music to commemorate those who have given their lives to promote racial equity through our nation's history, noting in particular that Memorial Day weekend was the weekend of the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921 and George Floyd's tragic murder 99 years later. We also want to specifically include music to honor those who are currently demonstrating courage to defend their freedom in Ukraine. The program includes many well-known hymns, including Amazing Grace and the Navy Hymn, with stunning solos and pristine ensemble work, along with more recent compositions by Zanaida Robles and Margaret Bonds.

An apocryphal story recounts that when conductor Nikolai Danilin first heard Sergei Rachmaninoff play the score for his All-Night Vigil (‘Vespers’), Danilin said “Where am I to get such basses? They are as rare as Asparagus at Christmas!" In the fall of 2019, Skylark presented the greatest masterwork of a cappella music as it had never been heard before: a performance of the finest professional vocalists in the United States anchored by world-renowned basses joining forces for the first time ever. After what was described by many Skylarks as their most profound concert experience ever, we vowed to re-visit the work again soon. Join us again in June 2022 for an encore performance, this time working from a new edition of the score prepared by Artistic Director Matthew Guard and Skylark Soprano Fotina Naumenko.
